Hmm, fascinating.  Someone from Proxim's (outsourced?) support staff 
emailed me back saying that 7.2 _does_not_ support the 5300 and 1400. 
Well shenanigans.  nonsense - clearly it does.  It just doesn't seem 
to support _mine_. ;-)

Heck, even the 7.2 docs say it supports the 5300 and 1400, having 
fixed the prior incompatibility in 7.1.

Go figure.  I emailed back saying essentially "Yeah, nonsense.  Are 
you sure 7.2 doesn't work on the 5300?  Maybe you should check again."

Of course, I was more diplomatic than that.

Anyway, is anyone still interested in this thread?  If not, I'll stop 
posting - it seems that my problem does not affect anyone else...
