Hi Stephen,
One very important piece of information to assist in answering your
question. What OS are you running, and hope to be running in the near
future? This is especially timely as the dig. audio prod. industry is
getting more and more poised for major migration to OS X.
Some VST plug-ins aren't ready yet, some are; some have pledged allegiance
to Core Audio (Apple's native audio/MIDI protocol), others (for ex.
Steinberg's ASIO VST driver protocol - a must if you're going to use VST w/
Digidesign hardware) hasn't made the migration, nor is in a hurry to get
there. Let us know :-)

P.S. I'm fond of MOTU, personally find Cubase simply odd.
