Regarding the pauses, is your machine networked? I had problems with my 1400 every once in a while. It had to do with the machine looking to connect with another machine that it was linked to before. The AppleTalk connection kept looking for the missing server. I think there is a folder marked "Servers" in you System Folder. This folder should be empty unless you're actually connected to another machine or are set to automatically connect to a server. Try emptying the folder and restarting. this should clear up your problem. Also turn off your networking controls unless you're on one.
