My understanding is that you MUST have 1 mb of vram in order to use a ce
screen, period.

Er, sorta.

In about 1 in 10 boots (with all the proper voodoo and providence), I can get a ce display to work on 512KB of VRAM. So far I've only been successful doing that with extensions disabled.

Like I said, though, even upgrading the 512KB of VRAM to 1MB (by way of a soldering iron and some fancy finger work) hasn't helped. More often than not, the screen just doesn't work at all. Sometimes it's a checkerboard pattern, sometimes it displays only about 1/4 of the screen magnified 4 times, sometimes the screen wraps over on itself, etc.

What I haven't tried is comparing the ROM of my 5300ce to my 5300cs. It has been suggested that the 5300ce has some extra lines in the ROM to support an 800x600 display. This might be possible. Somehow, though, I doubt it. I get the impression that the only difference between the models is the number of VRAM/DRAM modules on the logic board and the speed of the CPU. I don't think Apple would have gone to the expense of making an entirely different ROM for the 5300ce.

Effectively, though, you are right.

Peace,
Drew
