Hi.
I finally sat down last night to set my 5300 for use on my home network,
only to realize that I don't know what I'm doing.
This is a bit embarrassing, as I have set up hundreds of pc's for this same
thing, and had no trouble at all doing so with my eMac, in both classic and
ten.
I found the tcp/ip control panel pretty easily, set it to dhcp server. the
ip address doesn't display, although it says it's getting it from the dhcp
server, in this case, the router?
That's odd...t should work exactly as you've described. (It will have nothing to do with Appletalk settings) You're saving the new configuration and opening the TCP/IP control panel again to see if it's been assigned an IP address?
If this connection is coming directly from the DSL modem, it's possible you need to reset the modem to learn the hardware address of the powerbook. Often they will allow connections from only one machine.
However if it's coming from a dsl/cable router, then I'm somewhat at a loss.
It's possible to set those up to restrict connections to a known pool of hardware addresses, perhaps that's something to check, perhaps *it* needs to be reset.
(Don't forget to go and change the default password if you do, though!)
You could try tossing the tcp/ip prefs and start over.
Are you certain (despite the lights) the ethernet card is functional, and all the drivers are loaded?
