Using OS 8.04 w/Sonnet G3 400Mhz card. Recently tried two Orinoco Silver cards, but neither is recognized by the Orinoco software (though the card itself does appear as an icon on the desktop)

Same thing happened to me. With Mac OS 8.6, v7.x installed correctly on a 1400 with G3 upgrade, and on a 1400 133, but didn't install on a 1400 166. Same problems as you have. I found that v6.x installs correctly on that PB. Same thing happened on a friend's 1400 133, but we couldn't make v6.x work on that beast. We had to go down all the way to v3.x for that one.
