I learnt how to connect it to my PowerMac with a SCSI coupler so as to be able to use my installation CD for OS 8. But when it loads OS 8 from the CD it doesnt seem to load all of OS 8 properly and I get error messages about it not having a PowerPC system and to use 68K ? version of Internet Explorer not the version on the OS 8 CD. (Where to get a copy of IE 5 pre powerbook?)
Well, you just did what this 'professional' did, *twice* with his ;-)
When you connect via the SCSI disk mode, as you did, the installer runs on your PPC mac, and so the OS8 installer thinks it's installing on a PPC mac.
What you need to do is re-install the system, but this time choose custom install and 'Install system software for any mac'.
Also, the 8.1 update is very worthwhile.
To install it, put it on the 540's hard drive, boot the Powerbook and install from there.
I installed it from the PPC host mac, and again, it just automatically installed the PPC version.
That way the correct version of IE, etc all get installed.
