Im not too sure how many people were following the thread of getting my PB 540C to do what was wanted of it but this mini-update may be of some help to others. Thanks to Bruce Johnson who put me on the right track in the first instance, I've fould an alternative way of getting it to behave itself
As we all found out using a Powermac and SCSI connector to load OS8 doesnt work-as Bruce said it thinks its loading the OS onto the PowerMac and doesnt do it right. So I went and got an external Mac CD drive and an HDI-30 SCSI disk adapter to plug the external drive into the 540C direct ( both items easily found on EBAY). Although this makes installing a pleasure in copmparison to the previous eons wasted its not foolproof - you still need to beware and custom install. Then came the interesting bit - installing modem scripts was a drag and drop for the Zoom modems but on testing still lots of error messages about ports being used by other systems etc etc. We dont use ethernet and got round all this by disabling all the extensions we could find that might be interfering with the modems attempt to go online - something worked, as the system now goes online and we even managed to instal IE3.01 ( for personal reasons we have to use IE on this machine) but once again when it came to installing Outlook Express it baulked. - Does anyone know of a species of OE that works on 68K machines - and more to the point where we can download it from as it definately doesnt like OE 4.5 or any version of OE 5 we have! Whilst doing all this the Apple external CD drive packed in - so with nothing to lose we found an Apple internal SCSI 8x and duly unscrewed the box-threw out the 300i inside and replaced it with the 8x version - so we found out that XXXe suffix external drives can be renewed with XXXi suffix cheaper ones! Now back to giving it some programmes to play with - and the Quicktake 200 camera system works beautifully - so a completely portable " one-bag" system for lots of work but under $200.
