Is there any way to upgrade the processor in the Powerbook 5300 line? And did
any of the 5300s come with a secondary cache?

Thanks,

Craig W.

THe only way to upgrade the CPU is to desolder it and resolder a faster one down. A very non-trivial task, but something I am working on.

No L2 cache, no way to put one on.

Although it's not technically an upgrade, you can speed up the 5300ce by overclocking it. Increasing the bus speed is probably the best way to go. I'd try upping the bus speed to 40MHz and dropping the CPU:bus ratio to 3:1 for a 120MHz/40MHz 5300. The CPU should easily handle 3 extra MHz. Your biggest speed boost will be from the bus speed increase (which will speed up memory throughput - a big limitation for this computer).

You could also just try clocking the bus up and leaving the multiplier alone. I don't know how the 117MHz 603e will handle being clocked up to something like 140MHz. That's 23 extra MHz over what is "nominal." The 100MHz part handles 117 fine, so who knows, maybe the 117MHz part will work at 140. You could also increase the bus to 38MHz thereby giving you a 133MHz cpu. That's probably a safer bet...

As a side note, my 5300cs/e (5300cs overclocked to 117MHz) works great. However, I find that leaving it turned on for weeks at a time tends to introduce strange video artifacts (like the pointer leaving parts of itself all over the display when it moves). Like I said, this only happens if the book is on for weeks at a time (I was using it as a wireless network bridge). Turning it off for an hour or so clears up the problem...

Peace,
Drew
