Drew, it could be a heat related problem. Maybe if you had a beefier heat sink ?

Yeah, I figured. The heat sink could probably use some thermal grease. The heat sink itself can't really be made any beefier (space is very limited in the 5300), but it doesn't exactly make firm contact with the CPU. The 190's heat sink (I've got a 190 around here for parts) has a nice thermal pad. The 5300's doesn't. Maybe I'll scavenge that... I'd swap the heat sinks outright, but the 190's is a different shape (it doesn't have to cool the PMU on the 190 like it does on the 5300 since they are different designs)

Also, does your motherboard have a Chips and Technologies 65220 or 65225 video controller ?

Yep. It's on the underside, so it threw me for a second... The IC is marked "CHIPS T65225."

FWIW, Apple says the video controller is similar to the one in the 5x0, except that it can address 1MB of VRAM. I don't know if that will help you in your search for documentation, but who knows...

Peace,
Drew

I was just thinking that if you had the 65220 that might explain why you cant get the extra 512 K of VRAM you soldered onto the board to work well.
