It really does have a modem built in.  I believe it is an "Express" modem.
But someone else can tell you for sure.

I have connected in the past, but connections must be made with very old
software since the memory is limited, something like Earthlink 2.3.  Also,
I used Netscape 3.x I think.  I have tried iCab with little luck on very
old machines.  It is great for email but too slow and no java or effective
security for a lot of internet surfing.
