MR814NA at best buy.

The MR314 supports ethertalk, so you can network between wireless and wired older macs hooked to that router just fine; IIRC the 814 does not support ethertalk although any appleshareIP traffic will work since that is IP based, unlike classic Appletalk. The question is, are your other macs that you wish to talk with, AppleshareIP servers or capable of AppleshareIP?

Don't forget printing.

If you want you can now get Linksys wireless routers at Walmart lfor $40; but I'm pretty sure those do not support Appletalk. You can always set up crushftp or Netpresenz and move files around that way (via ftp), whichever router you go with. Be aware, some models router will support it (classic Appletalk) between wireless computers, but not let it cross from wireless to wired sides.

I think any router will handle AppleTalk between the LAN ports. That is (usually) just a switch and it doesn't know nor care about the protocol.

What I don't understand is why the wireless side is blocked. It seems like it would be simpler to transfer all protocols. I suspect it is bridged to limit traffic.

Even though I have ethertalk capabilty on my MR314, I usually ftp files around, but it is handy to have my ancient Personal Laserwriter NTR available via wireless for the 1400.

So if you are on a budget and opt for a clearance but non-Appletalk-capable router, it's not the end of the world ...

The SMC router I bought was supposed to do AppleTalk and it almost works (it can see zones) but doesn't. The main network uses I have are Internet, AppleShare, Timbuktu and printing. The first three I can do with IP only for the most part. My printers are all AppleTalk so that is out. I figured it's okay, I don't print that often. Then I switched to OS X and there are no drivers for those printers anyway so... Now I'm looking for a new printer that is photo quality and networkable via IP. Unfortunately there aren't many in the price range I want. Oh well...

Bottom line is it turned out that I don't need AT so much now.
