This has popped up from time to time here, and the consensus is that there is a contamination issue with some PB displays. Moisture may seep in through imperfect seals (water is poisonous to liquid crystals), causing the darkening. A bad backlight could also cause darkening, but if the display is clear and bright in the center, the backlight is ok. There's no cure for this problem other than replacement of the display. Btw, if you end up doing a transplant, I'd be interested in the old display.
