suddenly (as in, the very first time I booted up in Sys 7.6 by the HD and not CD or floppy), the screen is showing curled blacking out in all 4 of the corners - looks like a piece of paper w/ cinged or charred corners from a fire that was put out (the center of the screen is still sharp and clear).
What is this?
This has popped up from time to time here, and the consensus is that there is a contamination issue with some PB displays. Moisture may seep in through imperfect seals (water is poisonous to liquid crystals), causing the darkening.
A bad backlight could also cause darkening, but if the display is clear and bright in the center, the backlight is ok.
There's no cure for this problem other than replacement of the display.
Btw, if you end up doing a transplant, I'd be interested in the old display. I'd like to try out various experiments to see if anything can be done to reverse the damage.

What can you do at home ? If I could take the LCD to work, I could heat it gently under dry nitrogen and then reseal the corners....but alas, I cant.
