The plastic carrier for the button/switch had cracked, and allowed the switch to wiggle around rather than stay in one place.
Pulled the switch assembly, removed the switch, and used methyl chloride to melt the carrier back together. Dunno where you can get methyl chloride, but I know sign makers use it to fuse plastics like Plexiglas together. Just flow a small drop into the crack, hold it together for a few seconds, and it's as good as new.
