What I'd love to know - what part of the OS checks for battery type, and
how does it do it? An interesting hack would enable Li-ion battery
charging in later OSes. IIRC, the burning-5300 phenom associated with
pre-production 5300s was caused by a defective batch of early Li-ion
batteries, scaring Apple from using Li-ion at all in the 5300/190 series.
I imagine by the time the 3400 had hit the streets, Li-ion battery
technology and production had been better perfected.

I suspect it's related to a gestalt selector... It would be interesting to try changing some gestalts and seeing how the OS reacts to a Li-Ion battery.

Anybody with both a 5300 and 3400 want to give it a try? GestLab allows you to modify the gestalt info of the operating system while it's running. I'd try it myself, but I don't have a 3400 battery....

Some things to try: Change the "batt" selector (it's undocumented, but some developers believe it is related to battery charge levels - however, it only ever returns the values 0, 5, and 6), change the "mach" gestalt (which determines what Mac you have - everything from a Mac Plus to an iMac), play with the Power Manager gestalts...

From what I understand, the OS version that allowed charging Li-Ion batteries only shipped with a very few 5300s (before they were recalled - fewer than 1000, probably, and probably only to developers). When the 5300s were re-released, System 7.5.2 with PowerBook 5300 Enabler already disallowed charging of Li-Ions.

It might also be interesting to install system 7.5.2 or earlier and hacking the mach gestalt to allow the system to run the 5300 without the system enabler....

Peace,
Drew
