The 3400 was the first PowerBook to use any kind of fan at all. The internal fan should be adequate for any cooling the PB needs unless you've clock-chipped the processor to above 240 MHz. The fan was spec'ed for up to 240. Mine comes on occasionally when I have the 3400 sitting on a carpeted floor; apparently all the heat goes to the bottom of the 'book and has no way to escape unless it's sitting on a desktop.
