How could we figure out if a cardbus upgrade has actually been performed on a used 2400/180 that we picked up recently? When we purchased it, we were told that it was cardbus enabled, but I know that only the 2400/240's came with cardbus enabled from the factory, so if our 2400/180 is cardbus enabled it was done later. When we cracked the case to put in more ram, it seemed very much as if no one had ever opened it before, or if they did it was a very clean professional job.
I use a macally usb pc card in my 3400. No problems. This is the only cardbus card we have, so we popped it into the 2400 to test if the cardbus would work. It causes a finder crash in the 2400, no matter whether we use it in the top or bottom slot. This is leading me to think that cardbus is not enabled on the 2400/180, even if we were told that it was. Is there any way for us to tell if it has been upgraded? We found a Japanese site which details in English the way to manually upgrade the 2400/180 by soldering on the mobo. But I am not sure that we could easily tell by looking at the mobo whether it has already been upgraded or not, without another 2400 board for comparison. Another odd thing is that the card cage seems much looser on the 2400 than on either of our 3400's. I know that our 3400/180 does not have the cardbus card cage, but I suspect that the 3400/200 (which I'm using now) does have a cardbus card cage. When we opened it we could see that the card cage was definitely different than the cage in the 3400/180. But the 2400's cage is definitely looser. This looser cage suggests that it might be cardbus enabled, but the only cardbus card I have to test is the macally usb, and we already know that our 2400 does not like this card. We know that the pc card slots work at least for 16 bit cards, I have used a 3com modem card and a farallon ethernet card in them with no problems.
