> I was wondering what models of powerbooks can handle g3, that are pre g3,
Pre-G3 models that can accept a G3 processor upgrade include the PowerBooks 1400 and 2400 models. The 1400, which shipped with a 603e processor between 117 and 166 MHz, is a very common and popular pre-G3 model for upgrading. However, the 1400 is still hurt by a 30-33 MHz bus speed, a 64 MB RAM limit and cannot support USB no matter what you do, so if you need USB or use programs that need a lot of RAM, it's not a good choice. The 2400 is a sub-notebook which was made for the Japanese market, but was sold in the States in limited quantities and is available quite often (there's one for sale, with a G3 upgrade card, on the swaplist right now). USB is unsupported on it, but tends to work, and can be made to work for sure with a $99 modification from MCE Techologies. It supports up to 112 MB of RAM. The best pre-G3 PPC PowerBook is the 3400, but it doesn't have an upgradeable CPU. You'd either have to stick with the 180-240 MHz 603e or else swap in a "Kanga" G3 motherboard. Which brings me to... The original PowerBook G3, aka Kanga, isn't a pre-G3 but I've seen them in the $250 range recently, and it's usually bracketed with the pre-G3s because it is essentially a 3400 with a 250 MHz G3 in place of the 603e. If you're looking for a G3 Powerbook on the cheap, and you find one of these (they're rather uncommon), it might be a good buy for you. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
