Are there drivers specific for PCMCIA cards that are to be used on a 5300?

Full modem cards are supported directly by the OS. WinModems require software on the computer to do some of the modem function. There is no support for this on the Mac so WinModems won't work.

Memory devices (PC Card flash or Compact Flash, SmartMedia, SD, MMC, etc with an adapter) also work directly.

Most other devices such as Ethernet need driver software.

FireWire and USB can work with drivers from Apple but AFAIK none of these work in a 5300 (they are all CardBus which the 5300 doesn't support).

What level of OS is the minimum that a powerbook can have to use the slots?

AFAIK 7.5.2, the original OS that shipped with the 5300. But 7.5.2 is buggier than just about any other Mac OS version so avoid it.

Any help would be appreciated as I could use a 56k modem instead of the 28k modem that can be used with the 5300.

A 56K modem could be used just as easily as a 28K modem. You will need a modem script that supports the particular modem.
