I have 2 3400's and use a mixture of batteries both Li-Ion and Ni-Mh with no problem in the computer(System is 8.6), some of the Li-Ions are marked for the 3400 and others for the G3, I have no problems charging in the computer, but the Ni-Mh will not charge in my after market charger by VST.
Odds are if you install something like 8.6 or later it probably is included.

When I do get this 3400 PowerBook how do I train the battery in order to ensure that it charges properly and retains the moist charge for the best performance. I will have one used battery and two brand new ones...
You don't have to do anything to the battery. But often the computer will need to learn the characteristics of the battery to tell how much a full charge is. It can do this by simply using the battery, at least part way down.
