I have a chance to buy a 1 Gig MD cheap and I was considering using it as my start-up/main drive and only using the internal HD as back-up. My system folder and commonly used software only amount to about 500 Meg so this would be feasible from that standpoint. I just wonder how they compare in energy use to a large HD.

They'll consume less power than the internal hard drive, but they are also _considerably_ slower.
A large genuine CF card would be better and slightly faster. Large CF cards aren't cheap, however...
