I recently acquired a used Powerbook 520c. It's in fairly good
condition with one major exception: essentially the screen is very
dim. In normal lighting I can hardly make out anything. If the room
is dark I can see the screen well enough, and the picture seems sharp
and consistent at least.

The previous owner's theory was that the backlight needs replacing.


Yep, that's a classic symptom of a dead backlight.
