I have three cards (usb, firewire, wifi) which each seem to work agreeably singularly through out a given session cycle. That is, that if they were in the computer and opperational when it shut down and no one disturbs the it, it will reawaken at startup and be normal. The curiosity is that when both slots are full this is not true. If at shutdown, both slots were loaded when the next start up takes place it is quite likely that neither card will awaken.
What Mac do you have? OS Version?
