Greetings Listers, My PB 190 (OS 7.5.3) came with Claris Emailer 1.0 and Netscape Navigator 2.0, and obviously I have an account with an ISP, so while these are slightly older versions of the software I normally use to go online (with my 7200/120 running OS 8.1: Emailer 4.0 and Netscape Communicator 4.04), I SHOULD be able to use my PB to pick up email and go on the web (however horribly slow it might be). Now....before trying this experiment, I installed my Internet connection software (Cybernex ConfigPPP) and updated it to match what I had on the 7200 (there had been some changes by my provider, and I still had the original disk from when my *7200* was still on OS 7.5.3 so I knew I had to update it). After configuring my PPP, the modems I tried were:
(1) A PCMCIA card, 56K. (2) A Global Village Powerport Platinum 28.8K (also a card) (3) A Global Village Teleport Bronze external modem. (4) A Best Data 56K external modem (which I daily use with my 7200, so I know it works). Here's what happened: (1) In no case did clicking on "open" on the PPP window work. It wouldn't even "pick up the phone" to dial. (2) The card modems worked ONLY when using ClarisWorks 4.0 Communications, terminal emulation, but while they connected me, my ISP wouldn't accept my password. Note that on the rare occasion when I sign on to my ISP's web page to get mail that way, they ALWAYS accept my password. Now, I don't really NEED the PB to go online; I'm mostly curious if I CAN do it, and I figure that if there was an email client and a web browser already on the hard drive when I got it, it's gotta be possible. Right? Any suggestions or ideas? ~Yersinia. ________ "Come, muse, let us sing of rats!" -- James Grainger, 1721-67 -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
