problem is I just bought a copy of 8.0, I don't want to have to turn around
and buy another copy at a greater price... You know of anyway I can make
this work with 8?

When you boot from the 8.0 CD, are you able to see the HD but there's just a little text file readme on it? That's definitive for the HFS+ incompatibility with the 8.0 system CD, read the text file.

No, there's really isn't a way to let 8.0 read it, you are going to have to either put your old system back on by getting an 8.1 or 8.6 install CD to be able to even see your hard drive contents again. That's an easy solution.

I don't *think* you can make an 8.1 bootable floppy, IIRC that stopped at 7.5.5.

There are a couple more complicated solutions though.
IF you have another Mac (powerbook required to make it easy I guess), and a CF flash adapter, you could build a 8.1 system onto the CF as has been mentioned here recently, use that to boot from, then copy the minimal 8.1 system to the 1400CS and bless it. That would be at least a start.

Or you could mount the 1400 onto a 8.1 or higher Mac in SCSI disk mode, and put 8.1 on it that way.
Is the 8.1 a free downloadable update (I think so, but it's been years...) ? then you'd just have to apply that update to the system on the HD.

You could also buy another Mac (goodwill 7200 or something, $20), put your 8.0 plus the 8.1 update on it, hook to the 1400 in SCSI disk mode , mount the 1400cs hard drive, put 8.1 update on it. And after all this you still wouldn't have an easy 8.1 reinstall for later.

I think just buying or borrowing an 8.1 or 8.6 install CD as suggested is your best solution.

HTH.
