You can try that, it shouldn't hurt to try. You might have to bless the system folder on the Zip though which means you could a little trouble getting the cart out of the drive but you can always turn power off, it isn't insurmountable by any means. I haven't booted a PPC mac from a Zip disk but I have booted 030 macs that way just fine. 8.1 from which powerbook?
