A couple of things are not clear to me as I'm pretty ignorant about
Compact Flash, etc. First, are there preferred manufacturers and
sellers of such cards, and do I need any sort of adapter?
Yes, you'll need a pcmcia adatpter for the card, about $10-$15. As for preferred manufacturers, I've had good experience with Lexar, Sandisk and Kingston.
Is a driver involved?
No. It appears as a disk drive, no driver should be involved.
Also, would I need to reinstall the OS onto the CF card or can I simply drag the system folder to the card volume and then trash the one on the HD?
Either should work.
I have OS 8.1 on one partition and OS 9.1 on the other
partition. 8.1 seems a little more sprightly to me, so that's the one I usually use. (any benefits to using 9.1 over 8.1?--I bought it to use with a "OS 9.1 or better" application that I no longer use)
Not particularly, if you don't have apps that need it. 8.1 is a really good all-around OS on low end Macs like the 1400, imo.
