I'm using 500-series laptops, but I've been able to keep a system folder
(7.5.5) on a PCMCIA CF Card (2 different ones, actually), and boot from it
to have a "known-good" system. All I've ever done is use the "Start-Up Disk
" control panel extension, after installing the proper PCMCIA drivers.
Assuming (dangerously) that you don't have a desperate need for the space it
would free up, you can leave the working system folder on your hard drive,
in case of catastrophic failure of the CF card or adapter.

drag the system folder to the card volume and then trash the one on the HD?
