This is strange to me, that so many folks are trying to rebuild their batteries. I had a 1400, and as I noted here before, you can buy a NEW 1400series battery from Wegenermedia.com for $45 ea-- I ordered two from them about a month ago- I think total was around $110 delivered for two main batteries, and I got the PRAM battery as well with them--it was around $10 as I recall..
I researched the rebuild route on the battery, and the cheapest i could find the individual cells put me at just under $50 for parts alone. I got the PRAM battery as well, as I wasn't sure about it--my date & time seem to be holding fine, but occasionally the machine wouldn't boot.. Of course you can't for SURE say that's the PRAM, but when I got the new battery and new PRAM battery in, she's running steady as can be! I just thought it's a LOT less expensive to buy than build, not even considering the time necessary to do it right. I found that I could get the cells for PRAM batteries, but it was $7.50/cell + shipping (newark.com), and then i had do the soldering & test it all, and if I screwed up anything, newark wasn't going to give me my money back. Anyway, just seems to me the intelligent thing to do, and I was quite happy with the results...
