I just got a refurbed PB 5300cs (Apple refurb--sealed in box w/manuals). It's a sweet little machine, with one problem. It won't recognize my external Apple CD-ROM drive. I am trying to upgrade to OS 8.1 from 7.5.2 via CD. I've checked the connections, the extensions, the boot sequence, the SCSI ID, but nothing seems to get the PB to recognize the drive. Any ideas? TIA, Heather (My other PBs include: a 1400c (G3 333), a 190cs, 2 190s, a Duo 230, a 170 and a 100)
Heather,
1. Does the CD ROM drive work on the other PBs you have that can handle a SCSI CD ROM? And, assuming the CD ROM works with your other PBs, one can assume that the cable you are using is completely functional?
2. When you say it does not recogonize the CD ROM, does that mean that it does not recogonize it either by doing the 4-finger salute* at start-up to boot from the CD ROM drive (holdng down just the C key doesn't seem to work on my 5300cs, IIRC), or by booting from the HD and having the CD ROM display on the desktop?
3. Does the 5300cs recogonize any other attached SCSI device?
It's kind of hard for me to tell from your post as to what you have tried and what remains unknown.
I would think that if 1 and 2 are "yes", then 3 would likely be "no" and you have a bad SCSI connection on the 5300cs. If all three are "yes" (i.e., the CD works on other PBs, the CD ROM drive won't boot or show up on the 5300cs, and the 5300cs recogonizes other SCSI devices), beats me. :-) It may be a termination issue, but if the CD ROM drives works on the other PBs, it should show up on the 5300cs.

*holding down command-option-shift-delete during boot overrides the selected start-up disk and boots from the next available disk with a valid System Folder (you probably knew this, but I'm putting it here for completeness)
P.S. Where did you get a "new" refurb 5300cs?
