thanks for all the hints, 540c is back to life. It was some softawre
corruption indeed (I also can't recall in which circumstance it crashed
last time), and I digged a pre-crash HD backup to copy over and things
went just fine after zapping PRAM also.

Still, I'm not able to determine what brand of modem is inside the
machine. I've recently purchased the book and replaced the pre-existing
OS without backing it up (can one be more stupid???). My Global
Village drivers won't install, as the machine says there's not a Global
Villege modem inside. Is there any way (apart from taking the thing
apart) to know what modem is there inside and get the appropriate
drivers?? And yes, there's a modem, the port is there, thanks for
previous suggestions. Running OS 7.5.5.
