That's an Open Firmware feature, iirc.  Might look here: 
http://bananajr6000.apple.com/ to get a bit more info, though a few links are dead and 
most sites stopped being updated a while ago, apparently.

But you're absolutely right; this is not tied to USB support in any way other than 
contemporary coincidence.
