I have the miniDuoDock for the 2300 and all the right connectors ie. back of
PB's to SCSI. My other Mac is a
Quadra 840AV that has the CD-ROM drive.

Well there you are.

Use SCSI Disk (HD Target) Mode. Do the Duos support that?

There's a bit about SCSI disk mode in my 5300 FAQ:
<http://www.alksoft.com/5300_FAQ/FAQ_2.5.php#2512>

Anyway, use the PowerBook control panel to set a SCSI ID for the PowerBook, then power off the PowerBook and Quadra. Connect the twain via SCSI (assuming you have the SCSI Dock Adapter - either a specialized SCSI cable from Apple or the "L" shaped 3rd party adapter). Power the PowerBook up. If you set everything up correctly, you should now see a SCSI icon marching across the LCD. (Be aware, using IDE disks larger than 4 GB in the 5300 or 2300 in SCSI disk mode can cause destruction of data due to a lack of large disk support in the PowerBook's ROM.)

Start up the Quadra. Once booted, the 5300's hard drive should show up on the Quadra's desktop as any other hard drive would. Then install the Mac OS using a universal install or custom install (don't do "easy install" as you will miss some of the PowerBook specific features of the Mac OS).

OTOH, if you are trying to install OS 8.5 or later, you will have to use the network method - 8.5's installer won't run on the Quadra 840AV.

Peace,
Drew
