What do you mean by "true" 68k OS, and that OS 8 was the first for PowerPC computers? System 7.1.2 ran on PowerPCs... OS 8 isn't exactly PowerPC native, either. My mistake. OS 7.6.1 was the last a "true" 68K Os, and OS 8 the first for Power PC computers.
(Here's a bit of info that's interesting - you can hack OS 8/8.1 to run on 68030 Macs, if they are 32-bit clean. So 8.1's actual system requirements are no different than 7.6's. So owners of the following PowerBooks can also run OS 8.0/8.1:
PowerBook 150, 160, 165, 165c, 180, 180c; PowerBook Duo 210, 230, 250, 270c
See <http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/os8_68030.html>)
What I'd forgotten was that OS 8 has a reachback ability for non-PPC code. It'll work on a 68K machine, but works better on a PPC machine. Sorry for the mix-up. *^__^*
What "reachback" ability is this?
FWIW, since OS 8 isn't completely PowerPC native (more like 80% of the code is still 68k), in my opinion it runs better on 68040s than on PowerPCs (especially first gen PPCs like the 6100 and PB 5300).
My Quadra 630 feels downright snappy in 8.1 with 32MB of RAM. My 6100 with 72MB of RAM in 8.1 is still sluggish.
The same goes for my Quadra 800 w/ DayStar PPC 601 upgrade. When booted with the '040, it feels mighty quick. With the PowerPC, it's a bit sluggish (though having a full 1 MB of L2 cache helps speed things up).
Peace, Drew
