Thanks to all that have answered my query about updating the OS on my PB5300.
Here is a brief summary of what happened and where I am at right now: Since I wanted to go to OS 9, it became clear that the aging Quadra would not do the trick. So, I borrowed a friend's beige G3 desktop with OS9.2.2. I opened up the Powerbook control panel and set the scsi ID for the PB, hooked up all the cables and booted everything. So far so good. The PB gave me the flashing SCSI icon and the desktop mounted the PB's HD. I put the OS 9 CD in the drive and brought up Disk First Aid. When checking the PB's HD Disk First Aid reported an unknown, unfixable error. Ok. No big deal. Rather than having two OS's on the PB, I would back up the data and proceed with a fresh installation. So I transfered all the data to the desktop, fired up Disk Utilities and re-initialized the PB's HD. I ran Disk First Aid again, and everything was A-OK. I then proceeded to do an installation of OS 9. Picked the target, selected custom install, picked the 'all' option and started. The install process updated the Apple Disk Drivers, and installed the OS. Powered off everything, disconected cables, and rebooted the PB. I does the self check, brings up the little happy macm starts booting, and then I get a sad mac and the chimes of death. Does anybody have any insight on what could have possibly gone wrong? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I still have the G3 here, and can reinstall, download utilities etc. thanks alex -- PowerBooks is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
