On the other hand, if you have a G3 in your 1400, I strongly recommend 9.1 (granted you'll need to max out RAM and turn VM on). In fact, due to the problems that the Sonnet extension has had with 8.6 and the 1400, it may not even work *without* 9.1 (although it does work in 8.1, so that may be an option for some users). I use 9.1 regularly on my 1400 with 60MB RAM, and it does pretty well.
