I use Toast on a 1400 under OS9.1 with no problems. I think you only need to get SCSI Mng. 4.3 to use a feature or two - I think using a RAM Disk as the disk buffer is one. I don't think I ever put this on my 'Book - I know I meant to look, but I think I have the stock OS 9.1 software. I can't look at the machine right at the moment, but I'm 99% sure of this.
Try it and see if it works, if you have a problem I can email you any files I might have that could help you, as it seems MacOS is fairly modular (at least within one revision or so) - i.e. I use OS 9.2's Startup Disk Control Panel under OS 9.1 etc. FWIW, I use both Yamaha 8424 and HP 6200 burners.
