I have a PowerBook 1400 that I dropped in a Sonnet G3 upgrade, 467 MHZ. It has OS 8.1 and I wanted to upgrade it to 8.6, so I bought the installer disk off eBay.
You probably can guess what happened. The laptop won't install it. I get the message that the installer doesn't work on this computer. (I also tried to do the same thing on my Performa 6116 which also has a Sonnet G3 upgrade and got the same results.)

Probably you got an iBook or a iMac Installer Disk.
You need an Universal or Standard or Regular Mac OS 8.5 or 8.6 CD.
I'm using a 1400c with a 333 MHz G3. At first, I used it with Mac OS 8.6 (Spanish), but later I upgraded to 9.1 (English) with no problems.
