Everything you said is accurate. You can install a hacked version of Apple's
USB support software and shave a USB card, or you can get MCE to do the
actual modification and it will fit properly.

I haven't, but I know someone who did do it, and to say that the 3400 was
"running" 10.1 would be a misnomer. Crawling was more like it. You could
time the screen refresh with a sundial, and that was with a 240 MHz version.

OS 9.1 or 9.2 works best because a 3400 is capable of running it well (you'd
have to hack 9.2 onto it, though); OS 8.6 is nearly as functional and
somewhat faster. It flies in 7.6 or 8.1, but that's kind of a waste of a
still very-good PowerBook. I run 9.1 on my 3400c/240, but replaced the
Finder, TCP/IP and OT components with the versions from 9.2.2 for a little
bit of a performance boost.
