Anyway, yeah, there was a version of AIM that allowed you to keep
your away message up and still send IMs without automatically
bringing it down.  That feature was fantastic!

Does anyone else recall that?

I do, but I don't recall which version. I remember my daughter wouldn't upgrade her AIM version because of it--and there was some feature she was missing because of that reluctance--colors in away messages, maybe? The version I use now for OS X, 4.6, lets you keep up away messages while imming. You're right--it is handy.
