Or if the Applestore has any of the old iBook G3's of the last revision, those could be a good choice.

I'm not sure what you're looking to do with this computer, so it's hard to say what's best. I've got a few macs, only one laptop. My dad has a 5300 that's hardly ever used, and it does all the basic tasks just fine. I've never really used it for web surfing, so exclude that, although I hear that iCab is a great web surfing program for lower end macs.
This may be off topic, but My first and foremost mac is a 400 mHz iMac DV SE. It runs OS 10.3 and OS 9.2.1 right now, flawlessly. I used it for more and more these days, now that I've dealt with it's inability to recognize it's own modem. I run MS office, email, websurf, scan, play music, etc with it. I mention it because since it's one of the older CRT iMacs, it only takes up as much space as is necessary for a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I've seen 400 mHz iMacs for for $300-400, sometimes less, and the older ones for even less.
Then there's my powermac 7500- very cheap (got it for $20) and extremely easy to upgrade to even G3 level. Most beige macs from the 7500 and newer are nice to have and keep up to date withcurrent programs, but take up more space than an iMac.
Then there is my third mac, more along the lines of what you're asking about. A powerbook 1400c. It also runs MS Office, operates well on OS 9.1 with its 233 mHz G3 upgrade and does all the basic web stuff easily enough, but isn't the fastest web surfer. I even got iTunes on it after i upgraded the HD to a 15 gig.
1400's are nice, and easy to upgrade. 3400's work better with OS 9, but can't be upgraded very easily. the Kanga/3500 seems like a decent laptop- basically a 3400 with a G3 in it. Alot of people really like the Wallstreet line, since they can be upgraded to 500 mHz, I think. I've heard the Lombards don't hold up very well over time as a general rule, but no experience there. One thing to keep in mind, however, with powerbooks is that their value doesn't depreciate like you'd think they should. For example, I've often thought about getting a pismo, but I've seen them go for more than $500 too often. The same with the old clamshell iBooks. I always thought it would be better to just shell out the extra 500 for a brand new iBook G4.
Hope that helps,
Brian

My wife is starting to get frustrated w/ my PB 5300cs (she's using it
primarily as a desktop replacement). It's generally too slow for her, and
she hates the keyboard (although an ext kb & mouse solved that part of the
prob).

My main mac is a slightly juiced-up g3/233 (320Megs RAM, 20 Gig HD, CDRW,
Zip, USB card, OS9.2.2). It does the job-- at the moment I see no need to go
beyond those specs in a 2nd machine (at least not *too* much). At the same
time, once I'm upgrading, I figure I should aim for a Wallstreet II or
better-- even an orig iBook should suit my purpose.

So what's it gonna be? Anybody out there have a "favorite"
G3 PB/iB? Any
models I should stay away from?

TIA, Katzy
