HEy gang...
I just installed OS 7.6.1 on a new HD in my daughter's 280c; as it tries to
do the 1st desktop rebuild (when the desktop pattern appears after starting up
the Extensions & Control Panels), it keeps crashing with a "Finder Error."
What happens is that the rebuild just gets started, and all of a sudden the
Control Strip Appears, and some of the Startup Items start launching. Then I
get the "Finder Error" message...
What is going on? I already tried to trash the Finder Prefs, but it did no
good. Do I need to replace the finder?
Thanks in advance,
Craig W.
First thing to try is to hold the shift key down AFTER the last extension displays its icon. This bypasses startup items and the like. It is possible that the first app that tries to load at startup is boogered up. Also, if you do a shift key restart (that is, prevent extensions from loading) and then move all control strip items, you could restart and see if one of those is messed up. Failing that, you're reduced to using the standard techniques for diagnosing an extension conflict.
Another hint is that if you just copied an existing setup to the new HD, some extensions & apps have their registration info tied somehow to a particular drive...
