You could also try a USB to Serial or USB to ADB adapter for the remote. I haven't personally done that, but I have the Keyspan USB Remote and its great. The range is phenomenal... If it works with an adapter I would strongly recommend it.

Those device adapters only work if the port on the computer is USB and the device is serial or ADB, not if the port is serial or ADB and the device is USB.
