Those device adapters only work if the port on the computer is USB and the device is serial or ADB, not if the port is serial or ADB and the device is USB.

So that won't work, unfortunately.  You might try the ZephIR instead.

I spoke too soon. The ZephIR controls _external_ devices, it doesn't allow you to use a remote control with your Mac. Still pretty cool, though.

You're looking for something _like_ the Keyspan Digital Media Remote that uses serial ports, not USB, right?
