The only way I could get a CD-ROM to work with my 520c or 5300c was to use a pass-thru terminator. Plus, it's really easy for the HDI -> SCSI adapter to shift if you reposition the laptop, and lose a connection.
Occasionally the drive's not seen at startup and I have to use SCSI Probe to remount the drive, too, but that doesn't happen all that often.
