I am looking to untether my PB1400 and go wireless. Read thru some of the
archives and did some googling. Bought a Proxim (Orinoco) Gold PC card,
model 8420-WD. Downloaded the Orinoco drivers and installed. My home
network router already has a wireless access point built in.

Where did you get the card? There are cardbus and non-cardbus "gold" cards. Last I looked I almost bought thewrong one. Check the tech specs, the 1400 can't do cardbus.

Orinoco software that was installed was v7.2. I currently use a PowerPort
Platinum PC card for a tethered ethernet connection. Tried the wireless
with and without the PowerPort card in.

I like my GV ethernet/modem card BUT I've found that its drivers don't play well with others.
If you verify your have a non-cardbus card, try disabling everything GV (cdev and extensions both).

I'll pull out my orinoco card and check the model #, 1 moment...
