Yes, if Main battery and AC adapter are good, and pins(5) are aligned w/ battery contacts as previous lister advised.
Which AC adapter do you have ? If it's the model# M7783 (25 Watts), it seems to charge the type III and type IV batteries more slowly than my model# 2693 (36 Watts) ...

To clarify ... I have a BTI battery listed as Type 4, 1.8 Ampere hours ...
Apple does not list any Type IV. Their Type III rates at 1.6 Ampere hours
Which may address your following info :

Good question. Both batteries have a silver tag on them:

        HiCapacity
        Computer Battery
    Fits Computer Models:

    APPLE DUO POWERBOOK 210, 230, 250,
    270C, 280, 280C, 2300 series

    12v 1800mAH NiMH

Re-order p/n B-589/D4

This "tag" does not look like any tag or label on the Apple Duo batteries I have (I's and III's)...
Nor does it resemble the BTI label.
Quite possibly another third party make ... the 1800mAH puts it at the type III (or IV) level.

I don't think so ...

Check System folder -> Control Strip Modules -> Battery Monitor
If Battery Monitor is there, and Control Strip is turned on, you should see the indicator when you open control strip.
Even w/ the deadest Type I battery I have, the indicator works ... shows charging (lightning bolt over battery cell),bars go from light to dark. But when all bars are dark (supposed full charge) and I disconnect the AC, the Duo dies ...
If there is NO Main battery inserted, the indicator will shrink to just an icon of a wire w/male plug end and a small black triangle ...
Unplugging the AC adapter, w/ a good/charged Main battery inserted, adds a dial type gauge to the indicator that hints at battery consumption ...

Do you see an icon of a battery (sealed acid type) at the right side of the Menu bar ?
