I have a 3400c/180 powerbook that was working perfectly until POOF - while
typing, the screen just disintegrated and went blank.

I've tried pressing the reset button and resetting the PRAM. Nothing.

It restarts - there's the dong sound, then a whirring noise inside but just
blank screen.

Any ideas on what's gone bust?

Thank you, Nancy

I think your backlight may have failed just like mine! But I'm in the queue first for a new one, ok? ;-)
