I have a 3400c/180 powerbook that was working perfectly until POOF - while
typing, the screen just disintegrated and went blank.

I've tried pressing the reset button and resetting the PRAM. Nothing.

It restarts - there's the dong sound, then a whirring noise inside but just
blank screen.

Any ideas on what's gone bust?

With the computer on can you see anything on the screen, you may need a bright light to see. If the normal display is there then your backlight or it's inverter have failed. If the screen isn't showing anything then the screen itself is likely the problem.

Also after you start up can you press the power button, get a beep then hit enter and have it shut down? If this is the case then it definitely sounds like a display issue. If it doesn't then it's some other problem, possibly memory.
